Visitor Visa

With this visa you can

  • visit family and/or friends
  • be here as a tourist, for a cruise or for any purpose except business or medical treatment

You can study or train for up to 3 months on this visa. But if your main reason for travelling to Australia is study, a student visa might be more appropriate.

You can’t work.

You must

  • intend to come to Australia to visit only
  • have enough money for your stay in Australia
  • not work in Australia
  • you must be outside Australia when you apply and when we decide your visa

Eligibility

Most visa applicants must meet minimum health standards before the department will grant them a visa. The department calls this ‘meeting the health requirement’. The department may assess your health as part of the visa application process.

You must be of good character to visit or live in Australia. This means you must meet the character requirements, and remain of good character.

The character requirements are set out under section 501 of the Migration Act 1958.

If you owe the Australian government money, you must have paid it back, or have arranged to pay it back.

You must have, or have access to, enough money to support yourself while you are in Australia.

You must only intend to:

  • stay temporarily in Australia
  • obey any condition and stay period attached to your visa

We might not grant this visa if it is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.
